01 — OUR STORY
Every son in the direct line has been a home builder, carpenter, and furniture maker.
The story begins in 1741 with John Pfeifer, born in Ebnat, Germany. Nine generations later, the same name is carried forward in Ontario. The family arrived in Canada in 1848 and established the farm in West Elgin in 1865. From that point, the work of building — houses, barns, furniture, and the quiet structures of daily life — has never stopped.
That tradition runs deep. My great-great-grandfather and great-grandfather built St. Henry’s Catholic Church, the first Catholic church in West Elgin. My grandfather continued the craft as both a builder and a boat builder. Farmhouses, barns, churches, and boats were all part of the same continuous practice of making things that last.
Farmhouses and barns are not references. They are the roots.
John Pfeifer Design is a return to what was always present. It is the continuation of a family craft that has shaped this place for generations — rooted in rural communities, informed by lakefronts, coastal edges, and mountainous landscapes, and guided by a simple belief: a home should feel inevitable in its setting and true to the people who live in it.
This is not a new direction. It is the work returning to its source.
02 — OUR DESIGN APPROACH
Great design begins with place and with people.
We start by listening — to the land, to the light, to how a family actually lives. The goal is not to impose a signature style. It is to help someone put down roots. We call this Your Way Home.
01 — Place first.
Every project begins with the specific landscape, climate, and history of the site. Buildings and objects should belong where they stand.
02 — Honesty of material.
Wood, stone, light, and structure are allowed to speak. Ornament is secondary to integrity.
03 — Quiet strength.
The best work does not shout. It endures.
The practice brings together three related disciplines: architectural design, craftsmanship (furniture and home accessories), and photography. Each informs the others. Drawings, making, and seeing remain connected — the same continuous act of building that has defined this family for generations.
The result is work that feels considered, grounded, and lasting.
